Measure the space you actually use
Write down the room's length and width, then measure the furniture area the rug will serve. Those are different measurements. In a seating area, decide which furniture legs you want on the rug and record that footprint. A rug can sit beneath all or part of the seating arrangement; the useful question is how your furniture will work together.

Use removable tape suitable for your floor's finish to outline a candidate rug's listed dimensions. Check the tape instructions and test compatibility in an inconspicuous spot first. 3M's surface guidance recommends testing compatibility; don't assume every painter's tape suits every floor.
Now sit down, stand up, and move the chairs. Look at the outline from the doorway and your usual seat. Try a second size if the first feels cramped or disconnected. Photograph each version, then remove the tape according to its instructions. Keep those measurements beside you when browsing rug inspiration.

Open every nearby door through its full swing and measure the clearance above the floor where the rug would sit. Compare that space with the rug and any pad together. Include the pad's thickness rather than checking the rug alone.
If a listing gives only pile height, ask for the total thickness. Tape shows the footprint; it cannot tell you whether the finished combination will clear the door. Check any storage drawers that open over the same area, too.
Read the cleaning instructions now
Find the exact rug's care label or manufacturer instructions before committing. Check the permitted vacuum settings, spot-cleaning method, and whether washing or professional cleaning is required.
If it says machine washable, confirm what actually goes in the machine and whether your washer can handle that size. Ruggable's care guide, for example, distinguishes whole washable rugs from systems with a washable cover and a separate pad. Some larger sizes require commercial machines. Check the instructions for your exact choice, including drying requirements and the space you'll need.
