A new stack of plates can look lovely in a photograph. The useful question is how that stack will work on an ordinary Tuesday: coming out of the cupboard, holding dinner, fitting into the dishwasher and going back on the shelf. Start with the journey your dishes make every day.
Count the pieces you actually reach for
Take a quick look at what you already use, including anything waiting to be washed. Notice what runs short between washes. You may need two more bowls rather than a complete set, or you may already have enough once the seldom-used pieces move out of the way.
Think about your usual meals, too. If you reach for a shallow bowl most evenings, give that shape a place on your shortlist. Our kitchen collection offers tableware inspiration while you work out what would earn its space.

Measure a plate and bowl you like using. Those familiar pieces give you something concrete to compare with a listing. Check the usable cupboard depth, space between shelves and room needed to lift a stack out comfortably. Allow for the door and hinges.
For bowls, look at both width and height. If stack measurements are unavailable, keep that as a detail to check. Our storage inspiration can help you consider an arrangement, but try moving your existing dishes before buying an organizer.

Look at how your current plates sit between the rack tines and how much clearance remains above them. A wider plate or deeper bowl may need a different position. Bosch's loading guidance recommends leaving space between items and keeping tall pieces clear of the spray arms.
Follow the instructions for your own machine. Dishwasher suitability and a workable loading arrangement are separate checks. If you wash by hand, consider the space for washing, drying and putting the pieces away instead.
Read the contents, not just the piece count
An 18-piece set need not contain 18 dinner plates or include mugs. For example, IKEA's FARGKLAR listing divides its 18 pieces into six dinner plates, six side plates and six bowls. This is a contents-list example, not a product recommendation.
Write down the quantity of each shape you would actually use. Also distinguish dish measurements from shipping-box measurements; the same listing includes both. Compare sets using their useful contents rather than the biggest number in the title.
Find the instructions for the exact range
Look for separate answers about microwave and dishwasher use, then read the conditions. Corelle's stoneware instructions, for example, allow both but prohibit microwaving empty pieces or tiny amounts of food. They also call for dishwasher loading that prevents pieces from bumping together.
Those instructions apply to that product family. Use the guidance for the exact dishes you are considering, including any decoration or finish. If an everyday task requires special handling, decide whether that routine suits you before ordering.
Make room for your existing favorites
A shared color, similar outline or repeated detail can help mixed pieces feel considered. Our decor inspiration is a place to gather color ideas. Keep useful dishes you enjoy; every place setting does not have to match.
