A weekend bag gets easier to pack when the weekend has a rough shape. Write down what is actually happening: Friday's journey, Saturday's main plan, dinner, and the trip home. Add the forecast and anything your host or accommodation has confirmed they provide. A long walk and a family lunch call for a different pile than a wedding and an overnight stay.
Make a pile with a purpose
Start with clothes for those plans, underwear and socks, sleepwear, toiletries, your phone cable and plug, and the documents or keys you need. Add activity-specific items where they have a job. Lay everything out before choosing a bag; it is easier to notice three maybe outfits on a bed than inside a zipped compartment.
Think through shoes early. Check whether the pair you wear can handle more than one planned activity. If another pair is needed, give it a reason and a place. Leave some room for the journey home, including a way to separate worn clothes.
Pack for the things you will reach for
Keep your wallet, travel documents and keys in a secure spot you can reach without exposing the whole bag. Put the layer you may need during the journey near the top. A small pouch you already own can gather cables; another can group little toiletries.

Before buying organizers or a new bag, try what is in the cupboard. Close the bag without forcing the zipper, lift it, carry it around the house and retrieve three things you expect to use during the journey. Notice the actual problem.

Open every pocket, inspect closures and look up the care instructions before cleaning. Osprey's backpack guide, for example, advises against machine washing and gives different cleaning instructions for certain wheeled travel packs. Follow the guidance for your own bag and allow it to dry fully before packing.
Check toiletry bottle labels, capacities and caps, plus how much product remains. Keep a short list of last-minute items you will still use before leaving, such as your toothbrush or phone charger.
If you are flying, check the actual flight
Confirm the allowance for your ticket and the airline operating each leg. Delta's carry-on policy, for example, includes handles and wheels in its measurements and notes that partner airlines may have different restrictions. Use the current requirements for your trip instead of treating a carry-on label as a universal promise.
Check the relevant airport security guidance for toiletries and other contents separately. Then return to your packing rehearsal: can you get what you need without unpacking everything?
